During the movie named Amy, the character Superintendent Ferguson states that the Deaf and Blind never mix, and if they do they don’t often get along. Unfortunately this would make sense, especially within the context if the time due to language barriers. A Blind person’s most effective mode of communication would be speech, while a Deaf person’s most effective mode of communication would be sign language. Due to this barrier many Deaf people and Blind people would have a very difficult time maintaining any conversation, much less meaningful conversations or relationships. Sadly this creates a wall between the two communities When they do mix however, this could lead to hostility out of pure frustration and lack of communication options.

I agree with you Kiara that a main reason the Deaf and Blind children do not mix is because of the language barrier between them. Since the Blind children communicate through talking and the Deaf through sign language, there was not a way for them to communicate which made for hostility and misunderstandings. Without the ability to effectively communicate, it is very hard for them to understand and get to know one another. The only Deaf child who tried to interact with the Blind children is Henry and this is likely because his mother is Blind so he has more understanding about blindness. Hopefully since Amy is able to prove that Deaf children can talk, there can become more understanding between the two groups of students. Once they realize they aren’t actually that different than one another, it is possible they will find a way to positively interact with each other.

I agree, the Deaf and the Blind children never mixed because of their communication barriers. Like Mikayla said, I feel that the work Amy is doing will greatly help the children get along. This will do so much good for the children because it will teach them how to get along with people who are different than themselves and foster a more inclusive school culture. This will not only better the children's quality of life, but it will help them to succeed later in life. They will have even more skills under their belt to navigate many different types of situations.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jake about the obvious communication barriers, however I feel as though the school is slightly bias towards only teaching and catering to the child’s ability. The other teachers had never tried to go against the norm, due to the possible consequences to mixing the children. However it is in the children’s best interest to mix and learn how to overcome the challenges they were gifted. They might seem like they are opposites however they can find a lot of similarities if they tried. Amy was able to encourage this process. This is a lifelong lesson for them, and for the staff at the school to encourage the students to become uncomfortable and grow as learners, students and friends to one another.

I think that the deaf and blind don't get along because they have a huge communication barrier as Jake said, but also the close quarter living and treated as lesser humans can make things harder for all of them. It's nearly impossible for them to get along when the only way they can communicate is by touch. Henry was the homie when he was defending the blind children from the deaf kids. We found out later that Henrys mom was deaf and that little bit of communication that henry learned was life changing for that family. So the deaf children and blind children could get along eventually maybe if they both learned tactile signing or deaf children could speak to them. Although that would be one sided, it would be better than no communication at all.
