The teachers felt that Amy "was qualified to do what even the experts say is impossible" because she submitted a letter of recommendation from the Horrace Mann School (which they did not know was fake at the time). At the time of the movie, people did not believe deaf people could learn how to talk but thanks to her letter of recommendation, the teachers thought that she would be able to teach the deaf children how to speak. She faked a letter of recommendation from the Horrace Mann School which led the teacher to believe she had experience with teaching deaf children how to speak. After they found out that the letter of recommendation was fake, they still believed in her abilities because she had been able to teach a child to teach a student to speak by that point. The time that Amy spent at the Horrace Mann School with her deaf child before he died gave her the knowledge to be able to teach deaf children to speak. She was ultimately able to teach the deaf children in her class to speak even though experts thought it was impossible.

I like what you said. Another thing that I think comes into play is how the adults thought no Deaf person would ever be able to speak. They seemed to feel that Deaf people were somewhat of a lost cause and would never be able to amount to anything. When Amy is able to teach Henry how to speak, it completely broke their expectations and really helped to change their world view. Until Amy did what she did, they literally thought teaching a Deaf person to speak was physically impossible.

Within the timeline of the movie, most teachers must have been incredibly excited at the idea of teaching their Deaf students how to speak. This is because most people did not believe it possible, including Mevina. Melvina was continusly opposed to the idea of Amy attempting to teach the children how to speak because she did not want to give the children false hope. Although she had been right to doubt Amy given that her letter of recommendation had been fake, however I am also glad to see that she was allowed to stay seeing as the other teachers had faith in her. I agree with you Mikayla that she was able to achieve the 'impossible'by teaching the Deaf to speak. Also, Jake, I agree that the point where their expectations had been exceeded was when Henry learned to say 'kite'.
