Current Deaf, Blind, and Deaf-Blind schooling...

Provide facts about current Deaf, Blind, and Deaf-Blind schools across our nation. Any statistics, norms, practices, or methods of operation should be woven in with what you are talking about.

  1. There are a lot of parallels on the topic of educating Deaf/HoH children between the movie Amy and the current Deaf schools/education programs. After visiting the Gallaudet University website and reading a few articles, I have found that the average education barriers and average factors to Deaf student success line up with that of those represented in the movie. The barriers are: knowledge of caregivers/the public, collaborative efforts, qualified professionals/services, meeting individual needs, and the child's self-development. The success factors are: high expectations, evaluation-driven instruction, data collection, understand that the children have individual needs, and give them every advantage possible. Though the time periods are fairly far apart, it is interesting to see that the ideals and statistics of teaching hearing-impaired children have remained virtually the same. Throughout the movie we see every single one of these barriers and success factors represented in one way or another, whether it be the rejection of oralism by the teachers, the special needs of each child (Deaf or blind), providing the children with opportunities to practice and grow, or having high expectation amongst the students and teachers.
